ESU 2’s teacher of the deaf/hard of hearing supports all students (Birth-21 years old) with hearing loss through direct, indirect or consultative services. Direct support from the teacher of the deaf/hard of hearing may include (but is not limited to) developing communication (sign language, speech, listening) skills, literacy and vocabulary skills, advocacy skills, and equipment independence. Support also includes building and maintaining positive collaborative relationships with all district team members and parents through ongoing consultation and collaboration. The teacher of the deaf/hard of hearing is an active participant in each student’s educational team. This may include evaluating a student to determine service eligibility, goal writing and progress monitoring, recommending and monitoring classroom accommodations, and participation in team meetings. Most importantly, the teacher of the deaf/hard of hearing acts as an advocate for all students with hearing loss, working to bridge gaps and ensure access and equity across settings to help prepare students to be successful individuals.
