Among 10 competing teams, Yutan and Wisner-Pilger emerged victorious in a March 24 round-robin, double-elimination qualifying tournament and will represent ESU2 at the Nebraska ESU Senior High Academic Quiz Bowl Competition April 25.

While a service unit may select two district teams to represent its region at the statewide competition based on earlier school Conference or Invitational play, this year our schools' administrators opted to stage a regional service unit competition to determine which two teams would advance to the 19th-annual State ESU quiz bowl competition, said ESU2 administrator David Ludwig. The playoff format is familiar from athletics and gives all teams an equal opportunity to advance. Plus, the reward of winning motivates students to do their best and brings more awareness and prestige to this important extracurricular academic sport.

Ten of our 14 ESU2 school districts entered teams for a round-robin, double-elimination March 24 regional competition, which was hosted by Wahoo Public Schools. Each team was composed of six high school students, and each team was allowed four alternates. Five teams were assigned to round robin groups. Within groups, every team had the opportunity to challenge one another in morning matches lasting 20 minutes each.

Points are scored by correct answers to questions; each question has a pre-stated value, and teams have only 15 seconds to respond. The questions range from trivial (easier), with 5 points for a correct answer, to profound (more difficult), with 10 points for a correct answer, and cover all academic disciplines: language arts, mathematics, science and social studies.

Teams advancing to the afternoon double elimination championship bracket were: Oakland-Craig, Wahoo, Wisner-Pilger, and Yutan.

At the end of day, Yutan emerged in first place; Wisner-Pilger finished in second place; Wahoo, third.

WISNER-PILGER TEAM FINISHES SECOND AT QB TOURNEY AND ADVANCES TO STATE: Connor Bloedorn, Carling Bloedorn, Elliot Fullner, Micah Fullner, Alex Glaubius, Steven Schutte and alternate Erica Lewis.

Each ESU may send two teams to the Nebraska Quiz Bowl on April 25 at the Nebraska Prairie Museum in Holdrege.

Academic Quiz Bowl promotes quick recall of general knowledge facts through a quiz bowl format similar to that used by the College Bowl Company, which sponsored a popular radio program begun in 1953, which became an equally popular television series from 1959 - 1970. Following its cancellation on television, the game reappeared on college campuses through an affiliation with the Association of College Unions International in 1977 until 2008.
