More than 50 teachers from across the ESU2 area and some from visiting ESU’s met on August 28th and 29th to learn DIBELS. DIBELS is an acronym for Dynamic Indicators of Early Literacy Skills. Used in elementary school buildings as a universal screener for possible reading difficulties, DIBELS is both economical and easy to learn and implement. Participants learned the background and research base that supports DIBELS as well as how to administer and score the 7 benchmarks that are designed around the Big 5 Areas of Literacy. The afternoon of the second day found teachers asking—I’ve DIBEL’d, Now What? So the training also went into detail on how to read the assessment booklets and implement strategies to assist the students in learning to read.
